SOCIAL STEWARDSHIP
We work closely with local communities to drive meaningful poverty alleviation and improve quality of life. This is done through a range of programmes that covers education, training and skills upgrade, healthcare and infrastructure development.
Through RGE’s various empowerment programmes in partnership with Tanoto Foundation, the group supports small and medium enterprises (SMEs), farmers and craftsmen in our operation areas.
Working with various corporate partners, RGE has supported more than 200 SMEs across 40 villages, providing financial and technical expertise and creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for the communities.
APRIL pioneered the Integrated Farming System, which includes training centres focused on sustainable farming and technical support for farmers. This is complemented by the SME development programme, designed to equip entrepreneurs with training and support.
Another business group, Bracell, champions a variety of programmes to raise and diversify farmer income and skill sets, while advancing the agenda of sustainability.
RGE supports accessible healthcare, from preventive initiatives to maternal and child health, ensuring that employees and residents in surrounding communities, most of which are beyond the reach of public services, may benefit from improved services and outcomes. Anchored in partnerships with local health authorities, NGOs and academic institutions, these efforts contribute to stronger public health systems and healthier futures. More than 20 health campaigns are organised each year to engage and educate communities on health, hygiene and nutrition. Our business groups work with local health authorities to provide free medical consultation and basic medicine.
One such initiative is APRIL’s stunting prevention programme in Indonesia, delivered in partnership with the Cita Sehat Foundation and regional health agencies. Targeting 74 villages, the programme aims to improve early childhood nutrition and development outcomes through five core pillars: community education, maternal health monitoring, improved sanitation, provision of nutritious food, and regular health screening. Notably, the initiative has helped reduce infant stunting rates to below 14%, demonstrating meaningful and measurable impact on child wellbeing.
RGE has trained more than 300 healthcare givers, raising the standard and quality of health check-ups. These collective efforts have benefitted over 150,000 people across its areas of operation.
RGE companies support and drive infrastructure development for communities. The provision and maintenance of clean water, electricity and sanitation facilities in communities have benefitted more than 15,000 people. Other infrastructure and amenities such as roads, bridges, places of worship, religious schools, public schools, sporting facilities and power generators are also built or provided on a regular basis.
RGE's company Asian Agri is one of the pioneers in two key national smallholder partnership programmes: the Plasma (PIR-Trans National Government Migration) scheme and the regionally supported Kredit Koperasi Primer Anggota (KKPA) schemes. The schemes cover 60,000 hectares of plantation land and around 30,000 families in 11 estates. Teams of experienced and dedicated managers provide skills upgrading and technical expertise to smallholders. Besides training in production, they also receive help in infrastructure development and guidance on complex subject matters such as the High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) concept and the prevention and control of fire and haze.
We believe that education is a powerful driver of social progress and inclusive development. Across the group, our business units collaborate with local governments, non-governmental organisations, and educational institutions to create meaningful and accessible learning opportunities for staff and members of surrounding communities. These efforts span from early childhood development to formal primary, secondary, and post-secondary education—strengthening individual potential and community resilience.
In China, Asia Symbol partnered with the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to fund and co-develop a mental health curriculum for schools. Since its inception, the initiative has reached more than 170 primary and secondary schools in six cities, trained over 680 teachers and delivered specialised mental health education to more than 13,000 students, reinforcing the importance of emotional well-being alongside academic learning.
In Brazil, Bracell partners with the Chapada Institute of Education and Research to provide structured pedagogical guidance aimed at strengthening teaching quality and student outcomes. This partnership provides classroom-level guidance and tools to strengthen educational delivery and learning effectiveness in local schools.
Respecting and promoting human rights is a shared commitment across all RGE business groups. Through the Human Rights Policies adopted by its business groups, there is a collective focus on safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of individuals, including children, in both operational areas and the wider supply chain. Guided by international standards and stakeholder expectations, RGE’s business groups work to ensure that policies and practices are in place to support employees and local communities -- such as providing access to education, healthcare and essential services -- while strengthening family and community welfare. This commitment extends across sourcing, employment and community engagement, reinforcing inclusive development and the dignity of all people impacted by the business.
The Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) conducted by APRIL in 2022 mapped risks and assessed human rights impacts across its operations and supply chain. Informed by the HRIA, the group prioritised key focus areas including diversity, equity and inclusion, child protection, living and working conditions, and community livelihoods. To support implementation, APRIL has established due diligence systems, and in 2024, also launched its Children's Welfare Code of Practice as part of a three-year action plan. This initiative ensures children in its estates, including those of its contractors, have access to education, healthcare and related services, anchored in five pillars of focus: care, education, protection, welfare, health, and nutrition.

CLIMATE STEWARDSHIP
As a group of companies whose business is closely tied to the environment, RGE is committed to proactive efforts in conservation, restoration and management of the Earth’s precious natural resources through protection-production partnerships.
RGE promotes sustainable development and responsible forestry management, which includes the identification and protection of High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF), and implementation of low impact harvesting techniques. We nurture mutually beneficial relationships with local communities aimed at fostering awareness and best practices in sustainable development. For example, RGE’s company APRIL has conserved and protected more than 250,000 hectares of HCVF in their concession areas, as part of its Sustainable Forest Management Policy (SFMP), which is governed by an independent Stakeholder Advisory Committee to ensure transparency and implementation of the policy.
We have built our capabilities and established high professional standards to bolster our efforts at sustainable development and conservation. Apart from being equipped with state-of-the-art technology at our manufacturing facilities, RGE’s companies have been awarded the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 certifications and PEFC FM/CoC forest certifications.
Water recycling and energy efficiency are critical to our operations. We invest in water treatment technologies to clean water and minimise wastage, keeping water withdrawals below government-set guidelines. We recycle production waste and effluent to generate energy and at the same time reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
RGE believes that effective fire management is vital to safeguarding sustainable plantation management and ongoing conservation efforts, and it is for this reason that all our suppliers must adhere to our strict no-burn policies.
As part of our zero-tolerance approach towards the burning of forests, we pioneered the ground-up multi-stakeholder Fire-Free Village Programme, which empowers and incentivises participating villages to adopt no-burn approaches to managing lands.
Piloted in 2014, the programme has since expanded to include more villages and stakeholders who are both trained to eliminate slash-and-burn practices and educated on the impacts that illegal fires have on the local environment and our global climate.
We also work closely with governments and communities to manage fires in the unfortunate event they cannot be prevented. Our world-class suppression capabilities include:
Our group of companies plays an active role in eco-restoration.
APRIL has developed an action plan for sustainable forest management, which includes the pledge to restore a total of 40,000 hectares of degraded peatland in Kampar Peninsula and Pulau Padang, Riau. The Action Plan was created based on the SFMP, which is crafted in consultation with multiple stakeholders and independently audited. This is a hallmark of our long-term commitment to restoration, which previously included our pioneering “one for one” restoration pledge – i.e. one hectare of conservation for every hectare of plantations.
APRIL also founded and sponsors the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) programme, which is committed to delivering comprehensive ecosystem restoration of ecologically important peat forest areas on Indonesia’s Kampar Peninsula, to fulfil environmental, economic and social imperatives in a sustainable manner.
We uphold our principle of supporting conservation areas equal in size to our plantation areas. This helps revitalise native plant and wildlife species, and sustains long-term biodiversity and community life.

IMPROVING LIVES
As a dedicated corporate partner to governments and communities, RGE's group of companies drives and supports a range of initiatives aimed at improving the lives of people in our operation areas.
In Indonesia, Asian Agri works with the government to improve the standard of living in Indonesia by supporting a transmigration programme. The programme helps relocate impoverished communities from areas of high population density. Our involvement since 1987 has benefitted 30,000 families.
Transmigrated communities were provided with infrastructure, amenities, training and education via corporate-community partnerships, which Asian Agri actively supports. With robust research and development and expert consultation, Asian Agri has assisted with the provision of quality seeds and sharing of up-to-date agronomic practices. These support initiatives have raised the levels of literacy, skills, plantation productivity and quality among the smallholder communities – empowering them to live better and dignified lives.
RGE has more than 80,000 employees worldwide. We have manufacturing operations spanning Indonesia, China, Brazil, Spain and Canada, with corporate and sales offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, India, UAE, Switzerland and Australia. Our operations also create thousands of indirect employment opportunities.
With the help of RGE operations, many previously remote areas have been developed into small towns and cities, raising the standard of living for many local communities. Our business presence is supported by our building of infrastructure and improvement of capabilities, which raises the economic output of the local and national economies and contributes to the economic progress of respective regions.

KEPEDULIAN SOSIAL

PERLINDUNGAN IKLIM

RGE Group Sustainability Policy
The RGE Group Sustainability Policy provides an overarching framework for the sustainability policies and commitments of the RGE Business Groups (BGs).
RGE and its Business Groups are guided by our purpose of improving lives by developing resources sustainably. We are committed to sustainable development in all locations where we operate, inspired by our founder’s 5Cs principle that whatever we do must be good for the Community, Country, Climate and Customer, and only then will it be good for the Company. We fully support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to promote a balance across social and economic development, and the protection and enhancement of climate and nature.
For RGE, sustainability means the responsible management of natural resources; striving for positive impacts on natural ecosystems and people; driving resource efficiency through the elimination of waste in our products and processes; being part of the solution to global challenges such as climate change and nature and biodiversity loss; and working with our stakeholders for an inclusive and equitable value chain to improve lives.
This Policy applies to RGE and all current and any future Business Groups (BGs) under RGE. It requires every Business Group to:
All RGE employees, contractors, consultants and suppliers are expected to adhere to this Policy and in general, act responsibly and ethically. If a law conflicts with this Policy, RGE Business Groups, including all their employees, will comply with the law.
The Policy addresses four main pillars – Climate, Nature and Biodiversity Protection and Conservation, Human Rights, and Sustainable Growth.
Climate change is firmly acknowledged as the defining global challenge of our times and is expected to have major impacts on the economy, society and the environment. RGE recognizes the significant role of the private sector in driving mitigation and adaptation solutions in our value chains, including with the local communities in the landscapes where we operate.
RGE BGs will develop a coherent climate strategy, encompassing mitigation and adaptation, and with clear commitments and targets for deep reductions in GHG emissions. These will be achieved through comprehensive decarbonization plans including the progressive transition to renewable energy to help drive the shift to a low carbon economy.
RGE BGs will strive to align these reduction targets with the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C by 2050. We will adopt relevant global frameworks for identifying climate-related risks and opportunities, and develop strategies that respond to these, including advancing nature-based solutions by further increasing our already significant forest conservation and restoration initiatives.
Recognizing the critical importance of forests and natural ecosystems in combating climate change, protecting and enriching biodiversity, and sustaining community livelihoods, RGE BGs are firmly committed to zero deforestation, degradation and conversion in our operations and supply chain. We go beyond this by adopting ambitious and unique conservation pledges, such as conserving a hectare of natural forest for every hectare of plantation (1 for 1).
Following our production-protection approach to landscape management, RGE BGs promote and implement ecosystem restoration to help protect, revive and manage critical carbon stores and biodiversity habitats through securing long-term forest restoration licenses, provision of operational, technical and funding resources, and through partnerships.
At RGE we embrace our corporate responsibility to respect human rights, including the rights of Indigenous peoples and communities, and will comply with relevant national laws and regulations, and international conventions, agreements and standards in our approach, including the UN Global Compact, the International Bill of Human Rights, the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Human rights are inherent to all human beings regardless of nationality, place of residence, sex, identity, ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We commit to prevent and eliminate all forms of forced labor; adopt zero tolerance for child labor and any form of inhumane treatment of employees; promote equal opportunity and diversity in the workplace; and protect the health, safety and well-being of our employees and communities.
We are committed to raising awareness, promoting best practices, and putting in place mechanisms to mitigate any risks to human rights in all our operations.
RGE BGs are committed to growing their businesses through circularity, responsible production and the decoupling of production growth from any further draw down on natural resources such as forests. We invest significantly in research and development to ensure we attain high levels of efficiency in material use, recovery and re-use across key resources such as water, energy, chemicals and other inputs. We also adopt a waste-to-value approach where new business opportunities are created using the waste to manufacture new products.
To fulfill this Group Sustainability Policy, RGE and its Business Groups will:
The Group Executive Committee ( GEC ) sets the governance approach for sustainability, directs and approves policies, commitments and strategies, reviews performance, and ensures that decisions and actions are guided by integrity, accountability, and transparency.
This Group Sustainability Policy, along with relevant BG policies, will be reviewed periodically or at least every two years to ensure they remain current and relevant to the business and stakeholder context.
The responsibility for sustainable policy implementation is allocated to the Presidents of the BGs who are also a members of the GEC. The GEC is supported in these tasks by the Sustainability Committee, comprising the most senior Sustainability leads of the BGs.
RGE BGs will maintain publicly accessible grievance mechanisms and procedures at each location where we operate to enable employees and external stakeholders to raise any grievance or concern. RGE BGs will transparently respond to these and report on actions taken. We will regularly monitor the effectiveness of our grievance mechanisms and continually improve on these to respond to changing needs and contexts.
