Environmental Protection through Responsible Management
At RGE, we believe in caring for the environment through responsible management. This means that we do not source wood from virgin forest for our pulp mills. Instead, we develop unproductive and degraded lands into fast-growing plantations that generate renewable fibre for our long-term operational requirements. Using the Mosaic Plantation Concept where areas of high conservation values are left intact, biodiversity reserves and other environmental values are conserved in our forest concessions.
Even in degraded areas where most of our plantations are developed, we use sophisticated and sound forestry management practices and low-impact harvesting techniques to minimise any effect on the environment. We also employ innovative agronomic practices such as recycling processed fruit bunches from crude palm oil mills as mulch.
At the mills, we use advanced technology and low environmental impact processes to produce high quality products. Our plants are equipped with state-of-the-art water and effluent treatment facilities and our environmental performance is benchmarked against international standards. Full environmental safeguards are also established for our oil and gas operations.
In essence, our environmental management is founded on and defined by the Environmental, Social, Health and Safety policies of each of our operations. These policies are integrated into all aspects of our operations to enable a safe and conducive social and work environment. Furthermore, we also actively communicate and promote our principles and policies with joint venture partners, contractors and suppliers so that they understand and work in accordance with our practices to sustain a harmonious environment.
In recognition of our efforts, our operations have been awarded ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.
